History & Origins of the Flying Geese (4-Stack) Block

Flying Geese is one of the most recognizable motifs in American quilting, symbolizing migration and directional movement. In this 4-stack block, four 2:1 ratio geese units are stacked vertically to create a versatile column of flying triangles.

Piece Cut List

12" Finished BlockCut 4 geese rectangles 12.5" × 3.5" Fabric B. Cut 8 sky squares 3.5" × 3.5" Fabric A.
6" Finished BlockCut 4 geese rectangles 6.5" × 2" Fabric B. Cut 8 sky squares 2" × 2" Fabric A.

All measurements include a standard ¼" seam allowance. Finished block size: 12".

Step-by-Step Visual Assembly

Draw diagonal line on back of all 8 Fabric A sky squares.

Place one sky square right sides together on left side of Fabric B rectangle. Sew on drawn diagonal line and trim 1/4" seam.

Press corner open, then repeat on right side to complete one flying goose unit.

Repeat for all 4 geese units and sew together into a vertical stack.
