History & Origins of the Solid Square Block

Solid fabric blocks are the foundational canvas of quilting. Alternating solid squares with intricate pieced blocks (an 'alternate grid' layout) gives the eye a place to rest and highlights complex piecing. They also make quilts finish faster, since a solid block takes seconds to cut and needs no piecing.
