Month 1 · January

Solid Square

Rotary cutting precision, grainline alignment, and your scant 1/4" seam test.

Cutting list

  • 12" Finished Block: Cut 1 square 12.5" × 12.5" — no piecing required.
  • 6" Finished Block: Cut 1 square 6.5" × 6.5" — no piecing required.

Assembly

  1. Cut a single 12.5" × 12.5" square of fabric (for a 12" finished block).
  2. No piecing required — it's ready to join directly into your quilt top or sashing layout.

Pressing · Press with a dry iron straight down — do not drag the iron along bias edges.

Month 2 · February

Half-Square Triangle

The fundamental 2-at-a-time Half-Square Triangle (HST) unit.

Cutting list

  • 6" Finished Unit: Cut 1 square 7" Fabric A and 1 square 7" Fabric B (makes 2 HSTs trimmed to 6.5").
  • 12" Finished Block: Cut 1 square 13" Fabric A and 1 square 13" Fabric B. Mark diagonal, sew 1/4" on both sides, cut along line, and trim to 12.5".

Assembly

  1. Place Fabric A and Fabric B squares right sides together.
  2. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of the lighter fabric.
  3. Sew 1/4" away from both sides of the marked diagonal line.
  4. Cut directly along the drawn center line and press seams open or toward the darker fabric. Trim unit to size.

Pressing · Press seams open or toward the darker triangle, trimming dog ears cleanly.

Month 3 · March

Four Patch

The 2×2 grid, seam nesting, and strip-pieced four patches.

Cutting list

  • 12" Finished Block: Cut 2 squares 6.5" Fabric A. Cut 2 squares 6.5" Fabric B (or strip piece two 6.5" × WOF strips).
  • 6" Finished Block: Cut 2 squares 3.5" Fabric A. Cut 2 squares 3.5" Fabric B.

Assembly

  1. Join one Fabric A square and one Fabric B square into a 2-patch row.
  2. Repeat with the remaining two squares in reverse order to form the second row.
  3. Place rows right sides together, nesting the center seam allowances in opposite directions.
  4. Sew the center seam and spin or press the center seam intersection flat.

Pressing · Press seam allowances in opposite directions per row so center seams nest together.

Month 4 · April

Nine Patch

The 3×3 grid, alternating checkerboard rows, and strip sets.

Cutting list

  • 12" Finished Block: Cut 5 squares 4.5" Fabric A. Cut 4 squares 4.5" Fabric B.
  • 9" Finished Block: Cut 5 squares 3.5" Fabric A. Cut 4 squares 3.5" Fabric B.

Assembly

  1. Arrange the 9 squares into 3 rows of 3 in an alternating checkerboard pattern.
  2. Sew the squares into 3 horizontal rows of 3 squares each.
  3. Press the seams in alternating directions per row so adjacent seams will nest cleanly.
  4. Join the 3 rows together, pinning at each seam intersection.

Pressing · Press seams toward darker squares, alternating direction by row.

Month 5 · May

Pinwheel

Directional HST rotation and pin-spinning the center intersection.

Cutting list

  • 12" Finished Block: Cut 2 squares 7" Fabric A and 2 squares 7" Fabric B (makes 4 HSTs trimmed to 6.5").
  • 6" Finished Block: Cut 2 squares 4" Fabric A and 2 squares 4" Fabric B (makes 4 HSTs trimmed to 3.5").

Assembly

  1. Piece 4 identical HST units trimmed to 6.5" square.
  2. Rotate HST units in sequence so the blade triangles point in a continuous rotational direction.
  3. Sew the top 2 HSTs into the top row, and the bottom 2 HSTs into the bottom row.
  4. Join the two rows at the center seam and 'twirl' or spin the center seam allowance to press completely flat.

Pressing · Twirl or spin the center seam allowance in a spiral to keep the center completely flat.

Month 6 · June

Rail Fence

Strip piecing, precision sub-cutting, and 90° alternating optical movement.

Cutting list

  • 12" Finished Block: For a 2×2 block with 4 quadrants: Cut 4 strips 2.5" × 6.5" Fabric A, 4 strips 2.5" × 6.5" Fabric B, 4 strips 2.5" × 6.5" Fabric C (or sew three 2.5" × WOF strips and sub-cut into four 6.5" square quadrants).
  • 6" Finished Block: Cut 4 strips 1.5" × 3.5" Fabric A, 4 strips 1.5" × 3.5" Fabric B, 4 strips 1.5" × 3.5" Fabric C.

Assembly

  1. Sew 3 contrasting fabric strips (Fabric A, B, C) together along long edges to create a 3-rail strip set.
  2. Sub-cut strip set into four 6.5" square quadrants.
  3. Arrange 4 quadrants in a 2×2 grid, alternating horizontal and vertical rail directions.
  4. Join quadrants into rows and sew center seam.

Pressing · Press all 3-rail strip seams the same direction, then alternate quadrant orientations.

Month 7 · July

Flying Geese (4-Stack)

4-stack flying geese, stitch-and-flip corners, and crisp unblunted apex points.

Cutting list

  • 12" Finished Block: Cut 4 geese rectangles 12.5" × 3.5" Fabric B. Cut 8 sky squares 3.5" × 3.5" Fabric A.
  • 6" Finished Block: Cut 4 geese rectangles 6.5" × 2.0" Fabric B. Cut 8 sky squares 2.0" × 2.0" Fabric A.

Assembly

  1. Draw diagonal line on back of all 8 Fabric A sky squares.
  2. Place one sky square right sides together on left side of Fabric B rectangle. Sew on drawn diagonal line and trim 1/4" seam.
  3. Press corner open, then repeat on right side to complete one flying goose unit.
  4. Repeat for all 4 geese units and sew together into a vertical stack.

Pressing · Press toward the sky triangles so geese points stay sharp and unblunted.

Month 8 · August 🌟 This month

Churn Dash

Combining HSTs, framed strip rectangles, and a solid center square into a 3×3 grid.

Cutting list

  • 12" Finished Block: Cut 1 center square 4.5" (Fabric C), 4 background bars 2.5" × 4.5" (Fabric A), 4 frame bars 2.5" × 4.5" (Fabric B), and 2 squares 5" of Fabric A and B (for 4 HSTs at 4.5").
  • 9" Finished Block: Cut 1 center square 3.5" (Fabric C), 4 background bars 2" × 3.5" (Fabric A), 4 frame bars 2" × 3.5" (Fabric B), and 2 squares 4" of Fabric A and B (for 4 HSTs at 3.5").

Assembly

  1. Piece 4 HST corner units measuring 4.5" square.
  2. Sew 4 background bars (2.5" × 4.5") to 4 frame bars (2.5" × 4.5") to create 4 side units (4.5" square).
  3. Assemble 3×3 layout: HSTs in corners, side bar units on edges (frame bar facing inward), center square in the middle.
  4. Sew into 3 rows of 3 units, press seams in alternating directions, and join rows.

Pressing · Press toward the frame rectangles so the center square floats crisply.

Month 9 · September

Ohio Star

Quarter-Square Triangles (QST hourglass units) and 8-point star symmetry.

Cutting list

  • 12" Finished Block: Cut 4 corner background squares 4.5" (Fabric A), 1 center square 4.5" (Fabric C), 2 squares 5.5" Fabric B & 2 squares 5.5" Fabric A (sub-cut diagonally twice to make 4 QST star units at 4.5").
  • 9" Finished Block: Cut 4 corner background squares 3.5" (Fabric A), 1 center square 3.5" (Fabric C), 2 squares 4.5" Fabric B & 2 squares 4.5" Fabric A (for 4 QST star units at 3.5").

Assembly

  1. Make 4 QST (hourglass) units for the star points using Fabric A and Fabric B (measuring 4.5" square).
  2. Assemble top row: Corner (A) + QST + Corner (A).
  3. Assemble middle row: QST + Center Hub (C) + QST.
  4. Assemble bottom row: Corner (A) + QST + Corner (A).
  5. Sew rows together, matching seam intersections, and press flat.

Pressing · Press QST side points toward the corners so center hub seams nest cleanly.

Month 10 · October

Sawtooth Star

8 Flying Geese star points surrounding a large focal center hub.

Cutting list

  • 12" Finished Block: Cut 1 center square 6.5" (Fabric C), 4 background corner squares 3.5" (Fabric A), 4 geese rectangles 6.5" × 3.5" (Fabric B), and 8 sky squares 3.5" (Fabric A).
  • 8" Finished Block: Cut 1 center square 4.5" (Fabric C), 4 background corner squares 2.5" (Fabric A), 4 geese rectangles 4.5" × 2.5" (Fabric B), and 8 sky squares 2.5" (Fabric A).

Assembly

  1. Make 4 Flying Geese units (6.5" × 3.5") using Fabric B geese and Fabric A sky corners.
  2. Sew background corner squares (3.5") to both ends of top and bottom Flying Geese units.
  3. Sew remaining two Flying Geese units to left and right sides of 6.5" center square.
  4. Join top, middle, and bottom rows together matching all seam intersections.

Pressing · Press flying geese points outward and nest seams at every star intersection.

Month 11 · November

Log Cabin

The center hearth fire, clockwise strip sequencing, and light/dark value zoning.

Cutting list

  • 12" Finished Block: Cut 1 center hearth square 2.5" (Fabric C), cut light strips 1.5" wide sub-cut from 2.5" to 11.5", cut dark strips 1.5" wide sub-cut from 2.5" to 12.5".
  • 8" Finished Block: Cut 1 center hearth square 2.5" (Fabric C), cut light strips 1.0" wide sub-cut from 2.5" to 7.5", cut dark strips 1.0" wide sub-cut from 2.5" to 8.5".

Assembly

  1. Sew first light log to center hearth square and press outward.
  2. Continue adding logs in clockwise sequence: 2 light logs, followed by 2 dark logs per round.
  3. Always press seams outward away from the center hearth.
  4. Complete 3 full rounds of logs to reach 12.5" unfinished block size.

Pressing · Press every log outward, away from the center hearth, after each round.

Month 12 · December

Bear Paw

Multi-unit grand finale: 4 paw pads, 16 claw HSTs, sashing strips, and center cornerstone.

Cutting list

  • 12" Finished Block: Cut 4 paw pad squares 3.5" (Fabric A), 4 background squares 2" (Fabric C), 8 squares 2.5" Fabric B & 8 squares 2.5" Fabric C (makes 16 claw HSTs at 2"), 4 sashing rectangles 2.5" × 5.5" (Fabric D), and 1 center cornerstone 2.5" (Fabric D).

Assembly

  1. Make 16 small claw HST units measuring 2" square unfinished.
  2. For each paw quadrant: join 2 claws along top and 2 claws along side of paw pad, adding 2" background square in outer corner.
  3. Sew 4 paw quadrants (5.5" square) together with 2.5" × 5.5" sashing strips and 2.5" center cornerstone.
  4. Press sashing seams toward sashing strips.

Pressing · Press each paw unit toward the background, then nest seams at sashing intersections.

Month 13 · Finishing

Sashing, Borders & Binding

Join all 12 blocks with sashing and cornerstones, add borders, baste the quilt sandwich, quilt it, and finish with continuous binding.

  1. Lay the 12 blocks out 3 across × 4 down and audit the balance of color and value.
  2. Add sashing strips between blocks, with cornerstones where they meet.
  3. Sew the blocks into rows, then join the rows into the full quilt top.
  4. Add borders to frame the top.
  5. Layer the quilt sandwich (backing, batting, top) and baste it.
  6. Quilt through all three layers, then bind the outer edge.
